It’s never too late to find an eye care team that’ll go the extra mile for you!
As you grow older, your eyes can develop conditions and diseases that put your vision and eye health at risk. Some of these also develop asymptomatically for a long time. When you do finally notice symptoms, your vision may be permanently damaged.
An eye exam is the first step you’ll take to find the eye care you deserve. All you have to do is book your appointment and relax as our optometrist takes care of the rest!
Eye exams aren’t just something you have every 5 years or so. The American Optometric Association recommends healthy adults have an eye exam every 2 years between the ages of 18 and 64, and annual eye exams for those over 65 or at risk of developing an eye disease.
To ensure your eyes are getting the best possible care, we recommend annual eye exams regardless of your current eye health. Eye exams help us detect signs of diseases you may not know you have, including glaucoma, age-related macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy, and more!
How often you visit the optometrist depends on your eyes’ overall health. Some factors that put your eyes at risk include:
Past eye surgery
High refractive errors (myopia, hyperopia, and astigmatism)
Medical complications, including high blood pressure, diabetes, obesity, etc.
The use of medications with ocular side-effects
We work hard to provide a different kind of eye care experience. Whenever you visit us for an appointment, enjoy a fresh cup of coffee in our waiting room and relax before you’re personally escorted to our exam room. From there, Dr. Denton will:
Our kick-off conversation will help Dr. Denton confirm your past health history, family health history, and more so the exam is tailored to fit your needs. Please feel free to ask any questions or address any concerns you may have during this time!
Any feedback about your health or the exam will help Dr. Denton and our team enhance your experience for all patients. Once we’ve confirmed your medical history is up to date and answered your questions, we’ll proceed with the rest of the eye exam!
Assess Your Visual Acuity
Your visual acuity refers to how sharp your vision is without the use of glasses or contact lenses. This part of the exam is designed to determine the prescription you need for your lenses and ensure you get the clearest vision possible.
Dr. Denton can accomplish this in various ways, but some of the most common tools we use include a classic Snellen eye chart and phoropter.
Check Your Eye Health
Eye health doesn’t only take place inside your eyes; your whole well-being can affect your eyes and vision! Because of this, Dr. Denton performs blood pressure tests, body temperature tests, and more, to confirm how your overall health can affect your eyes.
Medical conditions like diabetes can lead to an increased risk of eye disease, so we use state-of-the-art technology to monitor eye and body health. Our tools include iCare tonometry, Goldmann applanation tonometry, and Maestro ocular coherence tomography.
Wrapping up the exam will be another conversation with Dr. Denton regarding her findings and recommendations to promote excellent eye health or vision. Some of these recommendations can include medications, glasses, contact lenses, laser eye surgery, and more.
If you have any questions, feel free to let Dr. Denton know! After your exam, you’ll be personally escorted back to the front desk where we will help find your next beautiful pair of glasses or wrap your experience with a smile.
